ANDRAS PARNICZKY JAZZ QUARTET

Hungary

  • concert

European jazz is slowly moving away from the American mainstream style, retaining all its important values, yet creating an improvisational musical language of its own. The Párniczky Quartet was formed in 2016 to perform reworkings pieces of Béla Bartók by the bandleader. The the group’s first album Bartók Electrified – released in 2018 by the Budapest Music Center – was a result of the joint work of the group and Párniczky’s doctoral dissertation research (“Only from clear mountain springs” The continuation of Béla Bartók’s music in jazz – LFZE Doctoral School). The direct predecessor of the Quartet was the Nigun band, where three of the current members played modern jazz based on the folk music traditions of Central and Eastern Europe. The Quartet’s second album, Mikrotheosz, released digitally by Fonó Records in 2023, and will be available on vinyl in the near future. The current repertoire of the band includes elements of chamber jazz, contemporary classical and folk music as well. The compositions of Párniczky are performed by the members with creative freedom, yet with great energy and articulation:

András Párniczky – guitar

Péter Bede – alt saxophone, tárogató (reed wind instrument, played in Hungary folk music)

Péter Ajtai – double bass

Ágoston Szabó-Sipos – drums
