PEDRO DE CASTRO – ONE OF THE MOST VIRTUOSIC PORTUGUESE GUITARISTS OF HIS GENERATION

Pedro de Castro stands today as one of the leading ambassadors of the Portuguese guitar: a musician whose artistry, versatility, and deep respect for tradition have made him a defining presence on both the national and international music scene. For nearly two decades, he has accompanied many of the greatest contemporary fado singers, shaping the sound of modern fado while preserving its historical essence.

Born and raised in Lisbon, Pedro began studying the Portuguese guitar under his mentor José Luís Nobre Costa, whose teachings remain the foundation of his musical identity. Influenced as well by legendary masters Raul Nery and Jaime Santos, he developed a style distinguished by expressive phrasing, technical virtuosity, and a unique sense of musical storytelling. His playing balances calmness and precision, allowing each note to resonate with emotion, authenticity, and an unmistakable personal voice.

Throughout his extensive career, Pedro de Castro has brought the sound of the Portuguese guitar to more than 80 countries. He has performed at iconic venues such as the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, the Olympia in Paris, the Coliseu in Buenos Aires, and the Munich Opera House. He has represented Portugal as part of the Presidential delegation to Colombia and collaborated with artists from a wide range of musical traditions.

Among the many celebrated fado singers he has recorded or performed with are Katia Guerreiro, Ricardo Ribeiro, Camané, Carminho, João Braga, Vicente da Câmara, Celeste Rodrigues, and Rão Kyao. His international collaborations include performances with Plácido Domingo, Martinho da Vila, Ivan Lins, and Fafá de Belém. He has also toured widely, including a major concert tour in Belgium with Pedro Moutinho and the Belgian Orchestra conducted by Gerry de Mol. As a composer, Pedro de Castro has created an extensive catalogue of works recorded by leading voices of Portuguese music. His compositions have been interpreted by Katia Guerreiro, Teresinha Landeiro, Salvador Sobral, Celeste Rodrigues, Ricardo Ribeiro, Gonçalo Salgueiro, Pedro Moutinho, and many others.

In addition to live performance, he has contributed to cinema, writing, performing, or producing music for films Filme da Treta, Segredos, and Carlos Saura’s acclaimed Fados, as well as several documentaries dedicated to Portuguese musical heritage.

Today, Pedro de Castro continues to share his artistry both on major international stages and in Lisbon’s most respected fado houses, where audiences experience the mastery, authenticity, and soul that define his musical journey.
